Traceability has become a concept that comes up more and more frequently day by day. Although it is widely used in the pharmaceutical industry, we have also encountered it in industries such as food and cosmetics. Traceability applications are not limited to these industries, and even the area where it is used is increasing day by day. In this article, we will touch on the traceability of agrochemicals, which is a little more special area.

Numerous animals and billions of people live on Earth. The common goal of all of them is to live. The basic necessity of life is food, of course. This is true for both animals and for humans. Although the prerequisite for living is food consumption, the basis of a healthy life is the consumption of vegetables and fruits. How can we ensure maximum yield from the decreasing agricultural areas as a result of the increase in population and urbanization?

The healthy growth of the products grown and the high yield in the unit area are the goals of farmers engaged in both intensive and extensive agriculture. Although there are various methods for this, the use of chemicals called agrochemicals or pesticides in the product to be grown is the most common in intensive agriculture.

Why Should Agrochemicals Traceability Be Applied?

Agrochemicals are also commonly referred to as pesticides. Traceability of agrochemicals is implemented to ensure that the amount of pesticide residue in nutrients remains within the limits set by various organizations. Because of this, the question “Are agrochemicals or pesticides harmful to health?” has surely come to your mind. Describing pesticides as potentially toxic, the World Health Organization (WHO) defines them as chemical compounds used to kill pests, including crabgrass. Recommending the safe and appropriate use of pesticides, WHO says that, the use of agrochemicals that have the lowest risk to human health and the environment.

There are of course side effects of pesticides used to increase yields. In particular, it can only be prevented from hindering sustainability and putting health at risk through the traceability of agrochemicals. Therefore, authorities who are aware of the situation and agrochemical producers who want to secure the reputation of the company by fighting counterfeiting have implemented the traceability of plant protection products.

Paper-based system applications and operation monitoring are not conducive to the traceability of agrochemicals. Instead, the implementation of digital-based traceability systems ensures that production is efficient and makes a significant contribution to the effective fight against counterfeiting.
